What was the 1970's children's book about a family that let their grass grow tall?

I remember a book for young readers (with lots of illustrations) written from the point of view of a kid whose family let their lawn grow out. The lawn turned into a mini-field with various wildflowers and birds and animals taking up residence. I also remember something about neighbors not approving, though I may be adding that in my memory.
