How do I become a Medical Illustrator?

I am currently in my second year studying BSc Medical Sciences, but I cant see myself doing research and working in a lab all day. Drawing and Illustration is my first love though and I was wondering if I can incorporate my Anatomy degree with arts in some way. Medical Illustration seems to be the primary choice Does anyone maybe know how one would go about becoming a Medical Illustrator? Where could you work? Is it a practical choice? Are there any oportunities in South Africa? (As this is where I am currently studying)
