Why are there so many contradictions in the bible?

The bible was written hundreds of years after jesus was dead.The stories have been handed down through the generations and the stories have been changed through the story telling.A bit like Chinese whispers.Some people add their bits to the story to make it more moral or more to their liking.It is not the true word of god.
